The new cult penetrated into the heart of the ancient myster-
ies in the 5th c. and thus a Christian church began operating
in the space of the Telesterion. In the late 5th-early 6th c. a
basilica was established on Iera Odos, close to the entrance of
the sanctuary, on the site of the Post-Byzantine naiskos of Saint
Zacharias. It was three-aisled with double narthex and annexes
that included a baptistery. In the Byzantine years the area fell
into decline. Under Frankish rule a tower was erected on the hill
W of the sanctuary, which was destroyed by industrial activity
in subsequent years.
