Diateichisma of Cassandria.
Along the present isthmus of Nea Potidaia survive the remains
of the diateichisma that closed the narrowest part of the Cas-
sandra peninsula. A total 1,200 m long and fortified with tow-
ers at intervals, it was established before the time of Justinian,
who repaired it after the destruction of Cassandria in 539-40.
In the early 15th c. repairs were undertaken by John VII Pal-
aeologus, and then by the Venetians.

Ormylia, a fortress was built in the 5th c., which was destroyed
and abandoned in the following century.
