istration was carved in the 4th c., based on Diocletian’s tax
reform. An Early Christian basilica has been discovered at the
site of the nearly ruined twin-naved Mid-Byzantine church of
Aghia Irene. The large cemetery to its S was used from the 1st
to the 7th c. The village of Perissa was destroyed by earth-
quake and deserted before the first quarter of the 8th c. One
more Early Christian basilica has been recognised to the NW
of Perissa, at Dendri near Aghios Ioannis. At Kamari (6), in an-
cient Oia, seaport of ancient Thera, part of an Early Byzantine
village has been excavated, as well as a three-aisled basilica
in the centre of the modern village.
The Mid-Byzantine period is represented by two small, twin-
naved churches: Aghios Stephanos (see above) at ancient
Thera (8) and Aghia Irene at Perissa (7). However, the most
